Basking in the afterglow of success

Taking his fourth UK BIS award at Windsor was the Standard Poodle, Ch/Am Ch Afterglow The Big Tease, owned by Jason Lynn and handled by breeder Michael Gadsby. His previous successes came at WELKS and the August Scottish Kennel Club last year, and at Border Union two weeks ago. Judge at Windsor was Bryn Cadogan.
WINDSOR, our most royal of shows with the historic backdrop of Windsor Castle, has steadfastly retained its traditional atmosphere of gracious sophistication despite the inevitable march of time while seamlessly perfecting such essentials as car parking, tenting and show layout.
The clean spacious rings are just as well mown as we have come to expect and the dusky pink jacket clad members of the committee are not only easily recognisable but so helpful and efficient, holding update meetings between themselves every evening to check on finer points.
The successfully proven recipe was the same as before, all except for the eminently practical innovation of two large well disguised – but far more easily accessible than the former single facility – superloo ‘villages’ situated at both the main entrances. I have it on good authority that the classical music playing in the disabled version was much appreciated.
The elegant arched entrance and white picket fence surrounding the official area was in place as always, as was the smart white fencing surrounding the main ring where banks of pink flowers, cleverly themed with the pink of the committee’s distinctive jackets, added a further touch of class.
Show manager Gary Gray says that they like to keep the impression of the show as being busy and not too spread out to retain the atmosphere while the in/out tenting gives space and shelter from the elements.
Although the designated grooming areas appeared to be perfectly adequate for normal purposes, once they had been commandeered by the more intensively groomed breeds, who come equipped with large heavyweight trolleys and set up camp for the day, there was simply no room for anyone in the ring on the opposite side to put even a small cage and brush down!
Jostling for position in these areas when nerves are fraught can so easily lead to bad feeling and unnecessary disagreements. Hopefully in the future someone clever, and Windsor are nothing if not resourceful, will devise a scheme to prevent this overcrowding.
The weather was clearly under orders from secretary Irene Terry and obediently provided close to ideal dog showing conditions being in the main overcast and dry with a breeze. Although this breeze was somewhat chilly at times and there was a brief shower on Friday, the welcome sunny intervals more than compensated for these minor shortfalls.
Thursday began with the news that both the M3 and M11 were closed, added to which there was a bad accident on the M25. Thus the start of judging was delayed for half-an-hour to allow both judges and exhibitors as much leeway as possible.
The strains of the National Anthem heralded the true opening of the show, as they did on the last day, and although somewhat menaced by static, could be clearly heard all over the ground. Unfortunately a number bothered neither to stand nor to stop going about their business even for the few minutes required as mark of respect to our monarch, on whose royal grounds the show is held!
The anthem led in to president Leonard Pagliero’s welcoming address wishing everyone a good day and emphasising that 'one thing we have no control over is the traffic!'
Going along with the current falling entries and despite the ever rising cost of petrol/diesel, Windsor fared better than some being some 600 dogs down this year. The number of overseas visitors was up to the 100 mark, with notably few from the US this year, possibly due to both the credit crunch and the imminence of the World Show in Stockholm, although many Australians seemed to be taking advantage of the closeness of dates, combining the two shows in one trip.
This year for the first time hospitality was dispensed to the stewards in the overseas reception area and this proved to be a most sensible, easily accessible and greatly appreciated innovation.
David Trowbridge, who retired at the show having served Windsor for 38 years as honorary veterinary surgeon, was given a surprise send-off being presented with three splendid gifts by chairman Oonagh Gore, who expressed the show’s gratitude not only for his expertise but for so generously waiving his fee in return for a donation to charity.
It was a beautiful evening when a packed ringside waited in eager anticipation for the climax of the show and exciting it was! The general opinion of the line up for best in show greeting Bryn Cadogan as he stepped into the main ring was that it was one of the best ever, chock full of the highest quality dogs.
Following a thorough assessment, his final choice of the white Standard Poodle, Ch/Am Ch Afterglow the Big Tease as the winner was greeted with rapturous applause, as was the runner-up Vizsla, Sh Ch/Aus Ch Hungargunn Bear Itn Mind and, finally the Bouvier, Ch Alsadie Freya at Kanix who was BOS.
Another great show run by people who so obviously care about all aspects of dogdom.

Best in Show
An excellent line up for BIS & I thank the officers & committee not only for their hospitality & warm welcome but also for the opportunity to judge BIS at such a prestigious show as Windsor.
BIS was Ch/Am Ch Afterglow The Big Tease, the white Standard Poodle, an outstanding male who just floats around & commands the ring, super Poodle head & eye, sound front & quarters, in first class coat.
RBIS was Sh Ch/Aus Ch Hungargunn Bear Itn Mind, Vizsla, has such type & balance, fills the ring with soundness & style, in first class order, made for a very close decision.
BOS was Ch/Dutch Ch Alasadie Freya at Kanix, Bouvier, very sound well made bitch, super outline, good body & bone, well presented, correct coat texture, put up a very good performance.
BRYN CADOGAN
It was an honour & a privilege to judge two groups at Windsor championship show on this my last judging appointment before retiring. The standard was good & I thank the breed judges for sending in such good dogs into the groups.
Working group
I selected 8 dogs for further consideration. The Malamute, Polarpaws Naknek Dreamer; Boxer, Shiloh Danish Pastry; Dobermann, Bosskat Hercules at Bobbygem; Russian Black Terrier, Robroyd I Lyka.
G1 was an outstanding Bouvier, Ch/Dutch Ch Alsadie Freya at Kanix, what can I say about this bitch, well boned, excellent head & body, good stifles & hocks, moved round the ring superbly.
G2 an outstanding Great Dane junior bitch, Merribox Love Struck, commanded the ring & looking a picture, super construction, good neck & body, should have an exciting future.
G3 the Newfoundland, Ir Ch Fairweather’s Knock Out with Brooklynbear, good head & muzzle, excellent outline, strong hindquarters, thoroughly deserved this place.
G4 the St Bernard, Carashon Take A Chance to Chandlimore, another impressive dog from this kennel.
JEAN COLLINS
Pastoral group
A super group. I would like to have shortlisted more. I pulled out the Groenendael, Ch Lebeou Look No Further; Puli, Weetoneon Mr Xaus; Lancashire Heeler, Ch Leonine Ivy of Ryslip; OES, Bovaron Can’t Stop Now; & Pem Corgi, Ch Doublered dragon at Woodhenge.
The four finalists were:
G1 the Australian Shepherd, Ch/Am Ch Heatherhill Shock N Awe, well known winner & deservedly so, I have admired this dog & awarded him G2 when I last judged the group two years ago.
G2 the Border Collie, Am Ch Avatar One Nite Standbayshore, I have not seen this dog before but was immediately impressed by him. I did not know that 1 shared a co-owner!
G3 the Samoyed, Ch Vandreem Imperial Capri for Berezniki, eyecatching, well constructed & moved well.
G4 the Finnish Lapphund, Int Ch Glenchess Revontull, this dog does not get the notice he deserves, an excellent example of his breed, he went round in tune with his handler who gets the best out of him.
Well done all four.
JEAN COLLINS
Gundog group
I was honoured to be invited to judge the gundog group at this excellently run show in such a superb venue with Windsor Castle in the background. Many thanks to the officials & committee for their excellent hospitality. The weather was ideal for the dogs, with just a little rain for a short time in the afternoon.
An excellent group of gundogs had been chosen to represent their breeds in the group. For my shortlist I selected six, namely the GWP dog, Golden Retriever bitch, Irish Setter dog, Vizsla dog, English Springer bitch & Weimaraner dog.
G4 I selected the elegant English Springer bitch, Trimere Tigra, beautiful head with a kind eye & expression, super outline & topline, expertly handled, in excellent coat & condition with sound movement, covering the ground well.
G3 was Sh Ch/Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Dom Perignon, handsome Irish Setter dog, well balanced head, lovely eye & expression, scored in outline, body, front & feet, well feathered & in super coat, moved freely & soundly.
The Golden Retriever bitch, Ramchaine’s Essential, was my choice for G2 in this very strong group. Super well balanced head, kindly eye & expression, lovely outline with good body & beautifully presented, sound stylish mover.
Last but not least was the well known, Sh Ch/Aus Ch Hungargunn Bear Itn Mind, I awarded this exhibit BOB at Border Union two years ago. He doesn’t look a day older than he did then, just wish I knew his secret! He could not be denied the top spot here. Super head, lovely neck & shoulders, good topline & turn of stifle, real showman & looked superb from any angle, excellent front, scored in every department & so sound on the move. I had the great pleasure of awarding him the well deserved G1. RBIS on the last day.
PHILIP GREEN
Hound group
It was indeed an honour to judge my first championship hound group at this lovely showground. Thank you to the committee for the invitation & the hospitality.
At this level I expected to find dogs who had breed specific type closely adhering to their Standard. On top of this & following closely I was looking for sound free moving dogs who could, if given the opportunity, fulfil their original function. I was not looking for performance, performance, performance.
With the above in mind & from the 25 present I pulled for further consideration the Borzoi, L/h Dachs, Min W/h Dachs, Deerhound & Elkhound together with my final placings.
G1 was the Irish Wolfhound, Ch Conchobar Fancyfree to Ravensbeech, impressive dog who fulfils my impression of the breed in many respects, masculine head & expression, good neck, well timbered legs & the substance all through as required to fulfil his function, particularly sound, free & active on the move with very good ground covering stride.
G2 the Beagle, Ch/Ir Ch Serenaker Devil Woman, close up to the Wolfhound, another who adheres closely to her Standard, lovely soft, feminine expression, good balance & well boned, moved particularly well which is not surprising given her excellent conformation.
G3 the Greyhound, Ch Mistweave Making Music with Ransley, a favourite of mine & I have judged her previously, her outline just flows from head to tail & she is so good to go over, moved out with long raking low to ground action.
G4 the Whippet, Huntinghill Jazzalicious, apparently winning her first CC, she really took my eye for her lovely balanced outline, my hands just flowed over her body, she used herself very well on the move extending without unnecessary lift.
PAUL S SINGLETON
Toy group
In recent times I’ve wondered about the current strength of the toy group compared with other periods. I’m not sure I know even now, having just judged this group, because a special show like Windsor has a draw that few others can match & so, regardless of individual breed entries, there tends to be a combined gathering of exceptional quality here. Certainly there can be no doubting that this was a very good group.
Even so, despite this strength in depth, I felt that the junior Italian Greyhound bitch, Dalinset Canzonetta, to be an outstanding winner on the day. Her flawless shape kept at all times on the move was stunning. Her action is typical without being prissy, she responded well to my request to show her head, ears & expression. Here, I thought, is my winner. Then her handler fell while moving her one last time. ‘Well, that’s it, look elsewhere’ I said to myself, knowing what Italians can be like, but not a bit. He got up, uninjured & she sailed on as though nothing untoward had happened. A temperament test & a half.
When it came to runner-up my eye kept going back to the lovely fawn Pug, Ch Teaseltail Talks In Ernest, because everything fitted so beautifully, no more so than when he showed it all off in his so typical movement, ideally cobby, compact & well ribbed, quality typical head without being overdone, he is all Pug in his prime.
Third was the black Pom, Ch Casarow’s Nightfever, my BOB at Blackpool last week & G2 at Manchester a couple of years ago. So yes, I like him rather a lot. Gorgeous head, so typy, such quality, in great form & coat, moved beautifully, never gave up, & those feet! Only tiny details divided. I think could have held his own with some of the best oranges of bygone days, & I can’t be more complimentary than that.
Fourth was the r/r Griffon dog, Ch Donzeata Royal Vintage, another I’ve done well before, in the breed when he was BIS at the LKA & as my group winner at Manchester. I don’t think I’ve ever seen his coat look better, it was spot on, the icing to that glorious cobby, well ribbed body, such an expressive head, willing & typical mover. He would have preferred a cooler day but even at this stage never gave up trying.
I also shortlisted the Bichon, Chinese Crested, Maltese & Yorkshire Terrier.
BRYAN MITCHELL
Terrier group
I would like to say thank you to the officers & committee of Windsor for the wonderful welcome & hospitality I received, on this my first terrier group appointment. As a first time group judge I was both excited & nervous, but thanks to Irene Terry & her team I thoroughly enjoyed my day. If ever you are invited to judge at this show, grab the opportunity with both hands, you will enjoy it.
The terrier group consisted of high quality dogs & I was spoiled for choice. I shortlisted 8 lovely dogs. They where the Bull Terrier, Cesky, WFT, SFT, Lakeland, Scottie, Norfolk & the Norwich.
G1 the Lakeland, Ch Louieville Red Prince, such a good example of the breed, straight front assembly, lovely layback of shoulder giving him that wonderful head carriage, short back plenty behind a well set tail, in a great crisp jacket & did not let up for one minute, a very worthy winner of this group that I was proud to see in the line up for BIS.
G2 the WFT, Ch Blackdale Carousel, most feminine animal, has the best of heads, neat well used ears, clean head, dark eyes, short back, well set & carried tail, responds so well to her handler who moves her at just the right speed, presented to perfection, a very close decision.
G3 the Norwich, Ch Ragus Ring True, have judged this dog in the breed before & everything I said about him still stands, such good type, short, cobby with most perfect head, sound both ways & recovered well after some confusion whether or not he had been shortlisted.
G4 the Bull T, Ch Teirwewyn Son Of A Gun, this dog is certainly a gladiator of the terrier group, wonderful head with good bite, strong muscular body, lovely bone, moved out well in a straight line, well deserved his placing in this line up.
SUE McCOURT
Utility group
It was a most enjoyable show with perfect weather, great hospitality & quality dogs. The group today was a good one with a couple of dogs as top contenders. I was however surprised to find two exhibits with incorrect dentition at this level. Presentation, sportsmanship & soundness was in abundance.
I shortlisted the German Spitz Klein, Shar-Pei & Tibetan Terrier, but my easy winners were G1 & BIS, Ch/Am Ch Afterglow The Big Tease, the Standard Poodle, I believe I gave him his first group & on that day he also won BIS. He is so well balanced from his lovely head & dark eye to his strong hocks, he owns the big ring & never puts a foot wrong stacked or on the move, presentation of his crisp dense coat was immaculate, this dog has charisma, style & soundness & these qualities should give him a superb career.
G2 the Bulldog, Ch Iceglint I’m Harry, r/w all male, superb head & width of jaw, he certainly conveys the impression of determination, strength & activity, moved well appeared to skim the ground, only a youngster but on this form has a secure future ahead.
G3 the Dalmatian, Dalleaf Mullberry, brown spotted imposing male of clean cut outline, he was balanced, strong, muscular & active, very sound on the move with reach & drive. At times just moved a little too fast. Shown in tip top form.
G4 the brindle French Bulldog, Glenlee Dancing Shadows, I placed highly this kennel’s dogs when I judge the group at Bournemouth, I admire their type, size & soundness, excellent droll expression & eye shape, correct bat ears, short cobby body, in lovely condition.

The working group was judged by Jean Collins as was the pastoral group, this appointment being her swansong in the judging field.
Her four placed dogs are featured in the photographs and captions; also shortlisted in the final eight were:

Her owner Linda Collins was also delighted to have bred the BOS Ch Domburg In Demand, winning his seventh CC.
It was a real family affair in Buhunds with BP, Arnscroft Di Di Di Delilah, being daughter of the BOB, Sue Sercombe's Ch Trelowen Pistyll, winning his seventh CC, and the BCC winner, Di Stirling's Ch Arnscroft Di-Sing With Death.
SECOND DAY
There was a great triumph and indeed an extraordinary coincidence for the Gladrags Curlycoats and the Raycris Large Munsterlanders, both of whom reached the creditable milestone of dogs bearing their affix having won 200 CCs apiece, with Charlotte Mann’s Sh Ch Gladrags Brief Encounter winning his 14th CC and Yvonne Moo’s Raycris Pipadash for Crackash his first.
Two delighted breeder/exhibitors did the double, Jean Harrison with her Gordon Setters, Sh Ch Paradise Old Velvet going BOB from Veteran and P Rock Sett winning her first CC, while Lee Cox and Tom Isherwood scored in Clumbers with Sh Ch Vanitonia Wot A Liberty, who was BOB, and her litter brother V U Bet I Do, who won the Pup of the Year here last year, winning his first CC.
Phil Green judged the group, choosing six for a further look, although none were asked to move again. The two not placed were Sharon and Barbara Pinkerton's German Wirehaired Pointer, Ch Bareve Beesterkraal, the youngest ever full champion winning his sixth CC.He has two G2s; and the Weimaraner, Sh Ch Gunalt Unstoppable from Mianja, Jackie Ward’s tenth champion winning a fourth CC.

Just to show the lasting qualities of the breed, Alexander's Field Spaniel, Carinyssander Artificier at Treveth, won his second CC at ten years old.
THIRD DAY
The toy group was judged by Bryan Mitchell, who was called to the Cavalier ring to decide BOB between two first time CC winners, giving the final nod to the bitch, Fantasa Itz Betty, giving Liz Dunhill her first BOB in the breed.
Among those kept in for further assessment and movement were: Sarah and Rosemarie Jackson's Maltese, Ch Benatone Gold Ring, triple BIS and winner of 11 groups, this was his 19th CC; Rita Harbury-Carlisle's Yorkshire Terrier, Ch Antaras Newsflash, no CCs for the breed today although he already has nine and six RCCs; Roger Stone and Tom Isherwood's Chinese Crested, Ch Vanitonia Brace Yourself, a sixth CC for the winner of two G2s and a G3; and Pauline Johns' Bichon, Ch Manoir’s Shot In The Dark, G3 Darlington '07, this was his sixth CC.
Winning a third CC, although not yet old enough to be a champion, was Mary and Roy Wilson' eight-month-old English Toy Terrier, Amalek Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Qualifying for his title with a third CC was Jenny and Ian Brown's Pug, Smugpug Tight Squeeze with Sensayuma, and Barry Wiggins and Karen Edwards' Affenpinscher, Roxilyn Just Joey with Scapafield, the third champion from a litter of five.
First CCs went to Mary Drewett's Cavalier, Judyland Magic Moods; Valerie Dunn's Min Pin, Bullypins Blaize; Jenny Scovell's Papillon, Frasermar Icicle at Caswell; Teresa Fraser's Japanese Chin, Homerbrent Midasi of Fralee; and Longcoat Chihuahua, Ballybroke Tardy, becoming Graham and Margaret Foote’s fourth CC winner this year.
It was a second CC for Michael Coad's Bichon puppy, Pamplona Could It Be Magic.
Paul Singleton was judging the hound group for the first time. Having just won her second CC, Alison and Scott Muir's Ridgeback, Kiromol Kantigi of Kikeba, was retired due to an unfortunate accident earlier when a trolley ran over his foot, cutting the nail up to the quick.
Among those shortlisted were Reg Bassett's Borzoi, Borodino Czar of Colhugh, no CCs today but he already has a RCC; Yvonne and John Oxley's Longhaired Dachshund, Ch Owlery Valentine, who has six CCs although none were on offer today; Ellen Blackburn's Min Wirehaired Dachshund, Ch Stargang Malachite, winning a fifth CC; Sarah and Heather Deerhound, Greyfriars Gille of Beardswood, no CCs on offer for the breed but he already has two RCCs; and Gill Bingham's Elkhound, Kritiko High ‘n Mighty of Steldawn, winning his first CC.
